MARKETING YOURSELF – AUTHENTIC SELF-PROMOTION
The cornerstone to advancing your career is successfully marketing yourself inside your current organization and externally in your industry and community.
Research proves the leading strategy to advance your career today is Authentic Self-Promotion. The essence is to communicate clearly and passionately your unique strengths, experience, relevant achievements (competitive edge & value proposition) to your SUPERIORS and other decision makers.
The Marketing Strategy for authentic self-promotion comprises the stages of being competent (you can do the job), confident (you know that you can do the job), credible (others know that you can do the job, visible (building your reputation to make good things happen) which leads to being elevated into a position of leadership or your desired outcome.

BUILD YOUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK
Your professional network is an important cornerstone of your career advancement in the short-term and especially in the long term. Often, it’s not what you know but rather it’s who you know and who knows you! There is a process involved in building a network. It’s not magical; it’s not for the reserved few born with an inherent gift for being social. The process is establishing, nurturing and growing mutually beneficial relationships.
Developing a professional network increases your VISIBILITY and access to resources, time, information (industry trends/challenges), informal networks and people to assist you to achieve your goals.
Research has shown that people who have a strong professional network – their social capital tend to: receive larger bonus payments; find better jobs more quickly that others; receive a higher overall performance evaluation and get promotions early.
EMPLOYER PERSPECTIVE – WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? – WIIFM
I have worked with hundreds of employers hiring and promoting people. I have insight into what is important to employers when hiring and I am happy to share.
Employers want to hire people that want to do the job posted and want to work with their company. As a potential employee, you must be able to communicate why you what to work for their particular company. You know what they do, know their values and/or mission statement, what they are proud of and what they are looking for in team members.
This requires that you do some research on the company prior to writing your resume and cover letter. The purpose for your resume and cover letter is to get an interview not get the job.
During the interview, there are 4 main questions that the employer needs answered – YES!
- Can you do the job?
- Will you love the job and stay?
- Can we tolerate working with you?
- Do you have the right attitude?
Smart employers hire for the right attitude as they know that you can train the necessary skill set and knowledge for the role. However, you can’t train for a positive “can-do” attitude and the individual who will be an excellent ambassador for their company.
Your personal brand toolkit will help you to let the employer know that you can (prior to the interview) answer all 4 questions – YES and get Hired!
Thank you for reading my blog. I intend to post regularly on authentic self-promotion, career strategies, building your professional network, client success stories, solutions (strategies) for the client challenges listed above and more on the employer perspective.
